Trauma Counselling

Trauma Defined:

Trauma is a broad term, and according to Mind UK, is an emotional response to a terrible event, or a build up of trauma reactions formed overtime, most usually in childhood abuse.  Ultimately, any event might be considered traumatic if you have experienced and/or witnessed a threat to your life, your body, your moral integrity, or had a close encounter with violence or death.

Usually, when we are faced with danger, we go into fight-or-flight mode, during which our bodies release hormones to help us act faster, to either fight or flee, this is very normal and evolutionary response to danger.  When in Trauma we become stuck in this mode, we feel helpless as we did at the time of the traumatic event.

Alongside counselling and talking therapies, Mindfulness can help people train themselves to get unstuck from a vicious cycle of negative thinking, and hypervigilence. often a cornerstone of trauma.

At Mindful Living UK we support the iRest approach to healing PTSD.   iRest Yoga Nidra is a research-based transformative practice of deep relaxation and meditative inquiry that releases negative emotions and thought patterns. It calms the nervous system and allows those traumatised to  develop a deep capacity to meet and be at ease with the circumstances we encounter in life.

Research has shown that iRest Yoga Nidra effectively reduces, insomnia, chronic pain, chemical dependency, P.T.S.D, depression and anxiety, however this is a practice open to all who are interested in discovering their home-ground of wellbeing and exploring the depths of the word ‘yoga’: to feel at one with everything.
